Grade 9-10 English Activity

Choosing the form to suit the purpose and audience

After visiting the Billy Bishop Museum, and using their resources,   Demonstrate an understanding of literary and informational forms, (such as poems, short stories, scripts, advertisement, reviews or supported opinion essay), and use one of these forms of writing appropriate to different purposes and audiences by:

  • Writing a review of your tour, encouraging local people to visit the facility
  • Preparing an article suitable for the Nieuport News, a newsletter that is provided to our membership and those visiting our museum
  • Creating a children’s storybook to inform a primary class about the War or the contributions of Billy Bishop, in a way they can understand
  • Writing a poem or literary piece for exhibit use, or for submission to the Legion (Contact our museum for more details)
  • Pretending you are Billy Bishop and either write a letter home to share the thoughts and emotions felt during wartime, or produce a piece that Billy might have written in his personal journal
  • Writing an editorial expressing your opinion about why it is important to remember our veterans. Consider submitting it to the museum, or the Sun Times
  • Writing a speech about the contribution of soldiers, or why it is important not to have to go to another World War
  • Creating a soliloquy (of Bishop or a soldier who served, or family member at home) that could be memorized and presented as a dramatical presentation
